Green Gurus and the Adams County Fair

Colorado - Green Gurus and the Adams County Fair

Workforce Innovation Submitted By: Adams County

Community Challenge/Problem

The Sustainable Adams County Program needed volunteers to assist at the Adams County Fair. Volunteers were needed to run a recycling booth and help people dispose of their waste properly. Because the fair had its own set of volunteers, the Sustainable Adams County Program was interested in advertising to youth groups and individual youth separately from the main fair volunteers.

Board Solution/Innovation

The Adams County Sustainability Coordinator contacted the Business Development Representative for the Adams County Workforce and Business Center's youth programs for assistance. The volunteer opportunity was promoted as part of the Governor's Summer Job Hunt program to give youth volunteer experience and get them registered with the workforce center. The Sustainability Coordinator was introduced to the Assistant Director of the Shopneck branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro-Denver and their teen leadership group was able to volunteer at the fair.

Outcomes & Results

The "Green Guru" volunteers worked at the Adams County Fair and educated attendees, and the group dedicated volunteers at all the recycling stations so that all the volunteers for the fair as a whole would have their roles covered. Each volunteer received a meal and a shirt during their shift, as well as great experience to build up for the start of their careers. In addition, the Sustainable Adams County program had funding available to compensate the group in the form of a donation to their program. It was truly a win for everyone.
