Larned Juvenile Corrections Facility

Kansas - Larned Juvenile Corrections Facility

Workforce Innovation Submitted By: Kansas WorkforceONE

Community Challenge/Problem

The youth at Larned Juvenile Corrections Facility (LJCF) needed to learn good work ethics as well as be able to attend college classes in order to assist them in becoming more successful when they were released.

Board Solution/Innovation

Kansas WorkforceONE began a WIA Youth program at LJCF. The program is funded through Kansas WorkforceONE youth funds. Youth approved for the program were offered opportunities for paid work experience as well as chances to earn their high school equivalency certificates or take classes for college credit. The most poplular course taken is the MSC which gives the youth skills that can be used immediately upon release in a new job.

Outcomes & Results

There are close to 40 youth enrolled in the WIA youth program at all times. The participants have learned good job skills through Work Experiences and have attended college classes offered onsite through Barton Community College. Over 21 participants have attained their high school diplomas or GEDs. One youth even graduated from Barton Community College while incarcerated by taking classes provided at LJCF. A majority of youth are able to graduate with an Associate's degree within one year of release due to this program. The program is making a difference in the lives of youth offenders and giving them the opportunity to improve their futures.
