Meet Destiny

Oregon - Meet Destiny

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Incite Inc

Workforce Challenge

Destiny was a 17 year old single mother when she came to the workforce center. She had been trying to pass the high school state standards Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills exam (OAKS) but had failed the math portion of the test and was in danger of not graduating high school on time.

Workforce Solution

Destiny heard from one of her teachers that a successful score on the National Career Readiness Certificate exam (NCRC) would count toward her math requirements for high school graduation. Destiny called the NCRC her “second chance” because the OAKS test only permitted her so many tries and this additional test enabled her to prove her math competency using a testing format she could better understand. She also felt that the NCRC represented a real world perspective on skills needed in the workplace.

Outcomes & Benefits

She passed the NCRC assessment in October and is now able to graduate high school on time. Once she graduates, she will have the opportunity to increase her work schedule to earn money for college expenses. She plans to study Humanistic Psychology so that she can become a psychologist or counselor someday.
