Meet Sustainable Construction Training

Community Challenge/Problem

To prepare a competitive workforce and meet the demand for jobs in Maryland's emerging green economy, Frederick County Workforce Services coordinates funding through a Maryland Energy Sector Partnership (MESP) grant. According to feedback from local employers, traditional industry skills training programs are not adequately preparing workers to successfully meet workplace expectations - particularly when it comes to "soft" skills.

Board Solution/Innovation

Using MESP grant funding, Frederick County Workforce Services partnered with our local community college to develop and facilitate a class-sized training course to prepare unemployed individuals for entry-level positions in Sustainable Construction. The program incorporated industry recognized trade certifications as well as workplace readiness and professional communication skill-building.

Outcomes & Results

The Sustainable Construction Training Program at Frederick Community College provided 15 trainees with 60 hours of instruction and resulted in 3 industry certifications. In addition, the trainees had an opportunity to practice their newly acquired communication skills at an employer networking/job fair event held at the conclusion of the training. After successfully completing the program, 35% of the participants were reemployed within 30 days. The remaining trainees are now better positioned to meet employer demands and qualify for job openings in this emerging sector of the labor market.
