Meet Gordon

Workforce Challenge

Gordon was laid off from his Crane Operator job in November of 2008. He had been making $30 per hour and had benefits. He tried to find another job in his profession, with no success.

Workforce Solution

He learned about Rural Minnesota Concentrated Employment Program (RMCEP) when he received a letter inviting him to a workshop at the Bemidji WorkForce Center. At the workshop, he found out there were many resources available to him and that he was a good candidate for upgrading his crane operator skills and earning an industry-recognized certification in Crane Operation. ARRA funds paid for him to take a 6-week course from Associated Training Services in Wisconsin.

Outcomes & Benefits

Gordon completed the course with flying colors and received his certification. In May of 2010, he found a Crane Operator job with Tradesmen International based in Ohio. He is making $30 per hour plus benefits. His line of work often sends him to many different short-term projects. He says, "It's a crazy life, but it's what I like to do".
