Meet Shayna

Workforce Challenge

Shayna is 19 years old and is expecting her first child in May. She had recently completed all coursework for cosmetology school online. Shayna came into the Steamboat Springs Workforce Center because she needed assistance to be able to travel to take the exams for certification and needed help with the cost of one of the exams.

Workforce Solution

Workforce staff believed that Shayna would be successful with her goals, so she was enrolled into the Workforce Investment Act program in order to help with her financial needs. She was also coached on test taking strategies and time management. Through regular contact prior to the exams she was also supported by workforce staff in order to ensure that she meet her goals.

Outcomes & Benefits

Shayna took, and passed, the exams and received her Cosmetology license. As a result, Shayna got a job at a local hair styling salon that will allow her to take time off when she has the baby and then return to work when she is ready. They are happy with her work and work ethic. Congratulations, Shayna!
