Meet Brian

Workforce Challenge

Brian came to the Edwards Workforce Center in November 2014 unemployed and had been living on savings for the past six months. He had been laid off from his job in HVAC and although he had been looking for work he was unable to find something that would offer him a sustainable wage.

Workforce Solution

Brian had contacted American Gypsum (a wallboard manufacturing company) about an available position. He had some transferable skills from his experience in HVAC but not all the necessary requirements for the plant job. Through an agreement with the company, the management contacted the Edwards workforce staff to see about setting up an On-the-Job training. Edwards staff worked with Brian and he was found eligible for the Workforce Investment Act program, so workforce staff enrolled him and set up a training plan. The Workforce Investment Act helped fund training for Brian as a maintenance mechanic in cooperation with the company.

Outcomes & Benefits

Brian used his transferable skills and the training program to successfully learn the new requirements for the position and a new career. He completed the Workforce Investment Act program successfully and was hired by American Gypsum as a full time maintenance mechanic earning $23.16/hour. His management is very satisfied with Brian’s work and his work ethics and also very happy to work with the workforce center and the On-the-Job training program. Congratulations, Brian!
