Meet Jose

Workforce Challenge

Jose's character of discharge from military service was not the highest obtainable. After his discharge he was having trouble finding civilian employment and had four children to support. His biggest barrier was himself because his self-esteem was low. He no longer saw value in the skills he learned in the military.

Workforce Solution

Jose was referred to the "Prep Connect 360" course, which helps veterans prepare for civilian employment and adjust to the civilian workforce. Jose knew he made a mistake in the military and took 100% ownership and was proactive to overcome his barrier. A Pikes Peak Workforce Center veteran's rep met Jose in the course and saw that he was struggling and referred him to the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP). Jose wanted to get a Project Manager certification, and after a comprehensive assessment, he was enrolled in Six Sigma training through the WIA, which built on his previous skills. Because he was out of work, he received supportive services while in the training.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jose completed phase 1 of the Six Sigma training and his self-esteem was greatly improved. Having a DVOP "coach" helped him get on the right path and he was able to find employment. He is still in the Six Sigma training getting ready to complete phase 2. However, the big news is that he was promoted to Quality Assurance Manager. Jose says, "It seems like the sky is the limit."
