Meet Nathaniel

Workforce Challenge

Nathaniel, a veteran, was experiencing a deterioration in his marriage and a worsening of PTSD. He was essentially homeless at times and unemployed but did have a bachelor's degree in biology. To get his life back on track, Nathaniel wanted help to become eligible for an internship in astro-biology at Harvard. However, he needed more math courses to qualify for the internship.

Workforce Solution

Through a special Dislocated Worker grant and the GI bill, Nathaniel was able to take the needed math courses. Through the American Job Center's help and support through this process, Nathaniel got back on his feet and became a real force in a local community college's NASA program.

Outcomes & Benefits

Currently, Nathaniel is applying for three internships at NASA. Some accomplishments during training: JPL Space Center Travel Grant for the Astro-biology Conference; Mars Student Travel Grant offered by the NASA JPL Mars Exploration Program; NASA Aerospace Scholar Most Valuable Player award; and lead a team of twenty people and wrote three peer-reviewed articles that are being published. Nathaniel is currently a teaching assistant for Harvard University Astro-biology.
