Meet Mary*
Workforce Challenge
Mary* was an unemployed, single mother with three teenagers who had faced many obstacles in life. She realized that she would have to take charge of her life in order to make a better future for her family.
Workforce Solution
Through a Work-Study Program Mary had the opportunity to interact with WIA Staff, and she discussed her options for training as a nurse with them. Although it was a big step, Mary committed to entering a nursing program and studying to become a registered nurse. Mary received tuition assistance and support from Workforce Development to help her complete the RN program and meet her goals.
Outcomes & Benefits
After completing the program, Mary was offered a position out of state and moved her family there so she could begin her new job. She went to work with a starting salary of $28 per hour.
Pursuing an education was compounded by rearing three teenage children, working, and supporting the family while attending classes, and although this made life very hard, it was worth the effort in the end.
