Workforce Success Story Submitted By:
Wisconsin Workforce Development Association
Cathy came to Workforce Resource in search of employment assistance in 2003. Her husband of 15 years had recently left her and her mother passed away, leaving her with full responsibility for her 3 children with only a part time job. She had moved to the area three years prior to this, had few friends, and no family nearby. She had worked in a factory for 21 years before moving to this area. In her words “I was lost, felt absolutely hopeless with no family here…"
A friend she had worked with suggested she talk to staff at Workforce Resource.
Cathy met with Sue, Chippewa County Training Coordinator, and went through an Assessment and Career Planning process. This assistance determined that an appropriate goal would be to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse through training at Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC). She began classes in the summer of 2003 while working two part time jobs. Financial assistance was provided through Workforce Resource for tuition and books, transportation, uniforms and shoes, and car repairs.
Outcomes & Benefits
Cathy completed her RN training in May 2008, passed her state board exam in July 2008, and became employed as an RN at Wissota Health and Regional Vent Center in December 2008. She remained on the program for several months after she became employed to assist with supports, both financial and moral, during her initial period of employment. She began on third shift, but has since transferred to a first shift position.
