Meet Lynn

Workforce Challenge

Lynn Kwolek of Canfield had been an administrative assistant at the offices of a retail chain for seven years. At the time she was laid off, she was earning $13.84 an hour. She had solid administrative support skills, but needed help in launching a job search.

Workforce Solution

Lynn came to the One-Stop workforce Center of Mahoning County for assistance with her job search. To help dislocated workers (those who lost their job through no fault of their own) return to the workforce, Ohio had launched Project HIRE (Hometown Investment in Regional Economies) in early 2010.

This on-the-job training program reimbursed employers up to half of a newly-hired dislocated worker’s wages during a training period. In Mahoning and Columbiana Counties (Ohio WIA Area 17), the program helped 77 dislocated workers return to employment and 33 companies lower the cost of training newly-hired employees. Lynn was one of them.

Outcomes & Benefits

Through a job search at the Mahoning County One-Stop, Lynn found and interviewed for an administrative support position at NEO HealthConnect, a regional organization facilitating the implementation of electronic medical records. The company was interested in participating and Lynn qualified for Project HIRE. Lynn was hired Sept. 13, 2010 and continues to work for NEO HealthConnect for $16.83 an hour.
