Meet Yesenia

Workforce Challenge

Yesenia dropped out of high school due to a high risk pregnancy during her freshmen year of high school. She enrolled in Goal Academy to complete her high school diploma, but was having difficulty completing class work and dropped out. The Goal Academy referred her to the WIOA Youth Program at the Adams County Workforce & Business Center. Yesenia became a DACA participant in 2012 so she would not be deported and so she could work because she had never had a job before.

Workforce Solution

Yesenia enrolled into the Youth Succeed Program to gain assistance with obtaining her HSE diploma. The Youth Succeed Program was able to set her up for in-house HSE prep. Yesenia was discouraged several times and wanted to quit the program, but the Youth Succeed staff would not let her and encouraged her to complete the HSE. Yesenia passed her HSE math test on her 3rd attempt and completed her GED. Yesenia then participated in a Work Experience for the Adams County Workforce & Business Center to provide her with work experience.

Outcomes & Benefits

Yesenia did an amazing job during her work experience. All WBC staff encouraged her and helped her with her responsibilities. She was able to learn quickly and do an amazing job. When her work experience ended, she applied for a temp position for Business Services and Employment First and was hired! Yesenia continued to do amazing work splitting her time between two programs. Yesenia then applied to be an administration assistant for Employment First and has been hired on permanently!
