The cost to bring a new employee on-board and train them is very time-consuming and expensive. For some companies, incentives to hire can provide the nudge needed in a tough economy to add to their workforce.
The goal of Project Hometown Investment in Regional Economies (HIRE) is to facilitate connections between jobseekers and employers by holding events around the state that bring together companies in targeted regional industries and job seekers by providing incentives for hiring and training. Project HIRE is a collaboration between the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), the Ohio Department of Development (ODOD), the Ohio Board of Regents (OBOR), and the local Workforce Investment Areas.
“Under Project HIRE, which was funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, an employer can be eligible for up to $6,000 in reimbursable training costs, whether it's classroom training or on-the-job training, if they hire a displaced worker. Project Hire is a great example of a practical program that can help dislocated workers get back into the workforce,” says Chuck Walters of SuperJobs.

“Having this source of training dollars available can make the difference as to whether a company will hire a new employee, or continue to wait until the economic outlook improves and budgets loosen up,” says Susan Ikeler, HR Mgr at Ascendum, a privately owned IT solutions company. Other companies that have tapped into Project HIRE include General Mills and The Mireagan Group. During the year, about 12 dislocated workers found new employment with the help of Project Hire.
