Workforce Success Story Submitted By:
Southwest Training Services, Inc.
When Jessie Blakeslee enrolled with Southwest Training, she was a single, unskilled, and unemployed mother of a newborn and knew she needed to find a stable career to support her child.
Jessie started out by enrolling in our out-of-school WIA youth program. Our office did an initial assessment of needs and began to set goals. She attended the National Retail Federation customer service training classes that we offer and ultimately became certified. This raised her confidence level dramatically. After completing the NRF program, she tried to find employment but realized that she needed more skills and training in order to find a family-sustaining wage. After researching schools and career options, she decided on Western Area Career & Technology Center’s licensed practical nursing program. While attending, she received high honors and kept in contact with her case manager who continually motivated her.
Outcomes & Benefits
Jessie graduated in June 2010. She was hired by Manor Care in McMurray on a part-time basis. In September, she passed her NCLES test and was promoted to full-time making $19.28/hr with full benefits. She loves working there, is making a self-sustaining wage and is very thankful for the assistance she received.
