Meet Brenda

Workforce Challenge

Brenda was laid off from the aviation industry where she was making $17.35 per hour as a Dispatcher. Not wanting to return to the aviation industry she decided it was time to pursue her dream to become a Registered Nurse. Struggling with the financial cost of attending school, Brenda sought assistance from the Workforce Centers of South Central Kansas. Her income was very limited at the time of enrollment and she already had a bachelor’s degree which eliminated her from receiving a pell grant.

Workforce Solution

Because of her layoff, Brenda qualified for funding from the National Emergency Grant. With help covering the cost of tuition and books, Brenda enrolled in the Registered Nursing program at Wichita State University. During her training program, Brenda gave birth to a second child and was able to maintain satisfactory grades while raising two small children.

Outcomes & Benefits

After graduating she was hired by a local hospital making $21.37 per hour.
