Meet Brett

Workforce Challenge

Brett, a 47 year old married father of one, was laid off from the aviation industry in December 2008. At the time of layoff he was a CNC tool operator making $20.59 per hour and had worked for the company for 2.5 years. Brett was unable to find employment in the same field because he did not possess a certification in machining or a degree in programming. He was very worried because he was making a high wage with relatively no experience or education and knew he would not be able to earn the same salary without updating his skills.

Workforce Solution

Brett sought assistance from the Butler Workforce Center to go back to school to earn a CNC machining certificate and associate degree.

Outcomes & Benefits

After Brett’s unemployment insurance ran out in July 2010, he accepted a job with an auto parts supplier. Hired as the assistant manager he started making $16.00 per hour. While this was only 80 percent of the wage he made prior to layoff, it was enough to support his family. Within six months, Brett was promoted to the manager of the store, and received a raise. Brett says his promotion would not have been possible without the associate degree and machining knowledge he received from Butler Community College and the help of the WIA program. He is very grateful for the assistance and support he received from the Workforce Center.
