Workforce Challenge

Rolando is 25 years old and on federal probation for felony convictions. He lives with his girlfriend and their 2 young children. When visiting the Workforce Center he had limited education, training, and work experience and had only been able to find temporary work for short periods of time in the past 2 years. He feared that if he did not find permanent work soon, he would not meet the conditions of probation and would be sent to prison. He was afraid of what could happen to his children and girlfriend if that happened.

Workforce Solution

Rolando first came to the Workforce Center for a tour that was conducted for the Federal Probation office. The very next day Rolando called to schedule a time to meet with a Workforce Professional. He explained to the Workforce Professional that he believed the felonies were preventing employers from taking a chance and hiring him. The Workforce Professional helped Rolando with strategies to explain the convictions on applications and in an interview. They also showed him how to emphasize his skills rather than dwelling on his criminal record. Rolando was very eager to learn everything he could and expressed that for the first time he felt comfortable and confident when discussing his conviction history.

Outcomes & Benefits

The day after meeting with the Workforce Professional, Rolando had a job interview and was offered the job the same day. Rolando thanked the Workforce Professional and said that he felt that the information they had discussed allowed him to present himself as a valuable asset to the company and not as a felon who needed a job.
