Meet Matt

Workforce Challenge

Matt was a fire captain employed in the area for many years when, due to health reasons, was forced to retire despite his desire to continue saving lives. With a mass layoff in the area, his health restrictions and his age as a barrier to employment, Matt struggled to find permanent placement, even with the multitude of experience and certifications he possessed. With him being the breadwinner of the household, Matt came to me to seek help with the WIA program as an eligible adult.

Workforce Solution

After evaluating his case, and helping develop an individual employment plan, we sought out different options in the area that were in demand and within his own interests. Actively job seeking was not turning up results for Matthew, even at an entry level position. Our WIA representatives helped counsel Matt thru his struggle, and thru using our diagnostic assessments and resources, made a decision that were within the guidelines of Matt's predicament and needs. Working hand in hand with the Wichita Truck Driving School, we were able to enroll Matt in the classroom for CDL with the intention of him becoming a driver, which falls into an in-demand occupation.

Outcomes & Benefits

Matt was exceedingly happy with the school, the instructors and how they were able to relate to their students' needs. He takes his final test this upcoming week, and thru his endorsement already has a position lined up in his community where his training will be utilized and allowing him to become self-sufficient yet again. He credits the WIA program with making it possible to turn his life around and helping with his battle against depression. He is terribly excited to return to the workforce.
