Meet Kris

Workforce Challenge

Kris is a former Administrative Assistant who was laid off of her job after 2 years of work due to a facility closure.

Workforce Solution

After discussing her options with a Case Manager at her local KansasWorks office, Kris decided to pursue a career as an Occupational Therapist. She remembered how fascinated she had been with the school occupational therapist that worked with students at her previous employer and felt that it would be a good opportunity for her. She was then enrolled in the WIA program as a dislocated worker and was approved to attend the Occupational Therapy Assistant program at Brown Mackie College.

Kris is very grateful for the $6000 she received in tuition assistance from the WIA program. She said that her Case Manager was very helpful and supportive. Having to report progress helped to keep her on track. Since she was in approved training, she was able to receive Unemployment Insurance during most of her training which was an immense help to her.

Outcomes & Benefits

Kris is now a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, working for a rehabilitation company, making $25.00 an hour. She was offered the job while doing her fieldwork. She also works “Pro re nata” (PRN) - as needed - for various other companies making $41.50 a visit. She loves her new career and the people she is assisting.
