Learning a new skill that lead to a new career

Workforce Challenge

Akonkwa is from Africa and moved to Hays in April 2014. He wanted a hands-on position, but needed to learn new skills, including converting from the metric system to U.S. measurements, tape measure reading and welding.

Workforce Solution

Akonkwa entered, through the assistance of the WIA program, into the November short-term welding program through North Central Kansas Technical College. Akonkwa learned how to use a tape measure, read U.S. measurements and welding.

Outcomes & Benefits

Because of his new skills, Akonkwa earned a position at Glassman Corporation in Hays. He earned a dollar raise in his first four months. His salary allows his family to be self-sufficient.
