Meet Paul

Workforce Challenge

Paul came to Heartland Works, Inc., a WIA Program Operator, in his 2nd semester at Cloud County Community College (CCCC) in the Wind Energy program, seeking financial aid for his classroom training costs. Paul had prior work experience as a sous chef and with a new baby on the way, wanted to pursue training in an occupation which had a more consistent work schedule, was in greater demand and offered a much stronger earning potential for his family.

Workforce Solution

The WIA program operated by HWI issued an Individual Training Account (ITA) voucher to provide a modest financial scholarship for partial coverage of his training costs at CCCC. Paul’s HWI Career Consultant provided valuable and ongoing encouragement and moral support while he was in training and once he completed the class, provided several rounds of resume/cover letter feedback, counseling on job search strategies, skill development with mock phone interviews and networking tips. Paul continually referred to HWI as his “lifeboat” to keep him afloat during the stress of job searching. He graduated from CCCC in May 2010.

Outcomes & Benefits

NextEra Wind Energy (California) offered Paul a Tech III position with a 40-50 hour workweek at $19.00/hr. Paul said, “I cannot thank you enough for all of the help/guidance/encouragement that you have given me throughout this ordeal. It has truly been a blessing to have such a grand cheering section. The kind of giving that you do on a daily basis is the best kind of gift that you could ever give someone. I would like to encourage you now to help others as you have helped me."
