Meet Nathaniel

Workforce Challenge

Nathaniel Lawrence, Jr. visited the St. Mary’s County JobSource office after transitioning back to St. Mary’s County from the Baltimore area. Economic conditions forced his layoff and he was having no success finding employment in the city.

Workforce Solution

His career interest was in HVAC and building maintenance, but he lacked the certifications and formal training that employers were seeking. His WIA Case Manager, Janet Hanke worked in conjunction with Alan Crawley, the LDVOP, his MESP Case Manager and DORS Counselor to enroll Mr. Lawrence in an HVAC Career Starter training program at the College of Southern Maryland. He completed it successfully and also earned his CFC Certification.

Outcomes & Benefits

His WIA Case Manager assisted him with his private sector and Federal jobs resume, targeting both towards his career field. After job searching locally with assistance from the JobSource office as well as searching out of the immediate area on his own, Mr. Lawrence secured a well-paying position (with apartment) as a Maintenance Technician for an apartment complex in Northern VA. His new employer requested that he provide his own tools, so DORS stepped in and assisted Mr. Lawrence with $500 in new tools so that he would be well equipped in his new position. Mr. Lawrence is a great example of a job seeker that used the full services of the JobSource office as additional community resources to become gainfully employed again.
