Meet Darren

Workforce Challenge

Darren McGregor had been laid off from his position as an Electronics Technician with a defense contractor supporting the U.S. Navy in 2011.

Workforce Solution

His WIA Case Manager, Janet Hanke, provided job search and career counseling services to provide him with the confidence that he had lost after his layoff. His resume was improved to better highlight his exceptional skills learned in his military service and previous civilian employment. Mr. McGregor met with the DVOP on a regular basis as well, obtaining job leads and career advice.

Outcomes & Benefits

When the OJT grant was implemented in Southern Maryland, the Business Services Representative, Barbara DeHenzel called on one of her business contacts to offer the OJT funds for qualified new hires. IET does electronics and electrical support work for the U.S. Navy as well as other Federal agencies. Ms. DeHenzel “sold” Mr. McGregor’s experience and skills to the owner of the company. He was granted an interview and started with them in May 2012. He sent an e-mail to his WIA Case Manager in September to say that he completed his OJT training successfully and received a $2.00 hour raise. His mother also sent his WIA Case Manager a note saying her son loved his job and thanking Ms. Hanke for her assistance.
