Meet Watson

Workforce Challenge

On September 26, 2012 Mr. Watson walked through the doors at the Eastpoint Workforce Development Center seeking Trade Adjustment Act assistance. He was laid off from Severstal/RG Steel due to the plant closing. His position at Severstal/RG Steel was as a Steel Fabricator. Mr. Watson was employed at Severstal/RG Steel for approximately 38.5 years. Even though he had lost a lifelong employment position, he had 3 goals when he came to the Workforce Center at Eastpoint which were to obtain a High School Diploma, training and find employment.

Workforce Solution

He received his High School Diploma at Baltimore City Community College with ease. He said that if he knew it was that easy he would have completed it years ago.
Mr. Watson was then referred to Career Navigator for career counseling. Mr. Watson utilized Career Scope and found out he had an interest in computer security. He is now attending the Community College of Baltimore County focusing on Information Systems Security. Mr. Watson is even attending the short condensed classes in the winter and summer.

Outcomes & Benefits

Mr Watson stated, he was very proud of his accomplishments and he is soaking up all the new knowledge like a sponge. He will meet with his navigator soon so that he can start looking for employment as he is anxious to put his knowledge to work.
