Meet Howard

Workforce Challenge

Howard worked as an Operating Technician for eleven years. He operated a remote control crane and drove a forklift. He has a solid track record in sales, management and customer service from previous employment. When he was laid off in May 2012, he learned that there are employment and training services available through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program through the Workforce Development Center.

Workforce Solution

Howard wanted to take advantage of training services. He thought that changing his career would be the right thing to do. He has always had a passion for computers. He was either fixing broken computers at home or inputting data in the computer system. He did his research and found that the Computer Technology Program is a growing field.
Howard had a meeting with his Trade Counselor to decide which program would be suitable for him. He wanted to become a Computer Support Technician. Through the Baltimore County Workforce Development Center (BCWDC), she provided career counseling and planning, job search assistance and training services. He enrolled in FORTIS Institute Computer Support Technician Program in December 2012, and then enrolled in Microsoft Network Technology Program in September 2013.

Outcomes & Benefits

While he was in training, he received transportation allowance through the National Emergency Grant (NEG) Program with Baltimore County. He was encouraged by the Program Director of FORTIS Institute to take the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) Certification, which was also paid for through the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) Program. Howard was very successful on his exams. He became a Certified MCTS, and was the only student in the school to receive his MCTS Windows 7 Certification. He graduated in June 2014 with a GPA of 4.00.
