Meet Kelly

Workforce Challenge

Kelly was laid off from RG Steel in the Fall of 2012. He enrolled in the Maryland Workforce Exchange at the Eastpoint Workforce Development Center with the assistance of NEG Counselor Vavara Kymbriti.

Workforce Solution

DLLR Staff member Angela Harkness provided a group orientation of Trade Readjustment Act features that were available to help staff gain reemployment. Ms. Vicki Zimmerlee provided follow up math/reading assessment testing plus a discussion of labor market options.

Kelly showed an interest in the initial study of labor market Electrical Systems Technology at Allstate Career Schools. He later changed to HVAC and enrolled in that course. Once enrolled in HVAC training, Kelly was dual enrolled in the Workforce Investment Act (WIA) that provided him assistance with job search, labor market information, plus other supportive services. In the fall of 2013, Kelly sought assistance from Ms. Zimmerlee in making his résumé more user friendly for enrolling in an HVAC apprenticeship program.

Outcomes & Benefits

In February 2014, Kelly successfully graduated from Allstate Career School and found employment with National Gypsum Company. He was reminded by his NEG Counselor of continuing services available to assist with transportation, uniforms, or other related needs as he started his new career.
