Meet Genevieve

Workforce Challenge

Anne Arundel Workforce Development Corporation met Genevieve at the first information session for the Dental Assisting program. The program was co-hosted by AAWDC and the Anne Arundel Community College, and included occupational training, academic skills enhancement, and wrap-around supports.

Workforce Solution

She came to us living in a homeless shelter with her one-year old daughter, and was estranged from her older child living with a relative. After going through the steps of recruitment, Genevieve was enrolled into the program. She was a stellar student who never missed one day of class. The program played a key role in providing the supportive services she needed to be successful such as gas cards, supplementary child care assistance, academic supports, and scrubs. Genevieve maintained a positive attitude while in the Dental Assisting program and her self-esteem soared as did her grades. Her performance in class earned her the opportunity to job shadow a dental assistant in a dental practice. The feedback she received was highly positive.

Outcomes & Benefits

The ACE Dental Program ended in late December and three weeks later Genevieve took the Dental Assisting National Board exam and passed the Radiation Health and Safety exam. She applied for a position working with an Orthodontist and after one working interview; she was hired for a full time position. ACE provided her two more weeks of gas cards until she received her first pay check. To date, Genevieve is happily working, reunited with her older child, and looking for an apartment for her and her two children.
