Meet Jerry...

Workforce Challenge

Jerry C. was residing at the Westside Men's Shelter in Catonsville, which Baltimore County’s Mobile Career Center (MCC) visits regularly. Although he had extensive employment experience and military service, Jerry disclosed that he had a criminal background. He had been working a temporary labor position, but reported that he did not have any professional clothing for employment interviews as he was desirous of transitioning employment with sustainable income so he could move out of the shelter.

Workforce Solution

The Community Action Network (CAN) manages the shelter and the Department of Social Services (DSS) provided resources and case management support while both entities provided resources to him. CAN referred Jerry to the (MCC) for employment assistance as well as Veteran Services. The Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist referred Jerry to Glen Burnie's Success in Style, which provided him interview-appropriate attire. Jerry then received résumé critiques and revisions, MWE re-enrollment assistance, employment leads, a referral to the Veteran Services as well as a referral to a Re-entry Information Session at the Liberty Center American Job Center (AJC).

Outcomes & Benefits

Jerry came for services in the summer of 2015 when he visited the Baltimore County AJC at the Liberty Center in Randallstown. He received and accepted a full-time employment offer with an assisted living facility in Catonsville as a Residential Helper with live-in benefits at the facility. As a direct result, Jerry was afforded the opportunity to move out of the Westside Shelter in mid-June.
