Meet Jessie...

Workforce Challenge

When Jessie came to us at Hunt Valley, he was working but not making enough to sustain himself or family. He had Med Tech certification, but lacked other certifications to make him more marketable in the Healthcare field. Jessie was getting twenty (20) hours per week of work and wanted to build a more stable career with benefits serving patients. He expressed interest in a Pharmacy Technician cohort training, but needed to keep his current employment -- which would not leave him available for classes.

Workforce Solution

Working together with his Career Consultant Ms. Fuhrman, Jessie’s résumé was updated along with his job search skills and strategies. They reviewed Labor Market Information and identified CNA / GNA certification as an efficient way to build Healthcare certifications making him more marketable in the field. Jessie was approved for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funded CNA and GNA training at HealthFocus and completed the program in October 2015. He earned his CNA and GNA certifications and updated his CPR and First Aid credentials. He participated in recruitment events including an onsite recruitment for Genesis Healthcare.

Outcomes & Benefits

Jessie found employment as a Caregiver for a local home health agency this month. Although Jessie’s base salary is $13 per hour, there are plenty of opportunities for a higher rate depending on the nature of the particular home visits (for example, $17 per hour for 1-hour home visits). In addition, he is guaranteed 40 hours per week at a minimum of $13 per hour. Jessie can receive overtime, bonuses, mileage reimbursement, paid training, and health insurance covered at 75%.
