Meet Yesi

Workforce Challenge

Yesi Flores joined the Marine Corp out of high school and served as a diesel mechanic for four years. In 2014 he left the Marine corps and found employment at $12 per hour ($24,000 per year).

Workforce Solution

On January 23, 2018, Yesi applied for the SANS Cyber Workforce Academy – Maryland after seeing an announcement for the program in a newsletter. He completed the two-hour SANS cyber aptitude exam online and achieved a score high enough to be interviewed. His passion for learning cyber security and his obvious professionalism won him one of the 10 places in the first SANS Cyber Workforce Academy – Maryland. The Academy enabled him to complete two immersion training courses (one live and one on-line) and two ANSI-certified certification exams – the same certifications used by the U.S. Defense Department to qualify their employees and contractors for advanced technical cyber security roles.

Outcomes & Benefits

Yesi completed his first course in Baltimore in April 2018 and passed the nationally standardized Global Cyber Security Essentials Certification (GSEC) exam four weeks later. With his GSEC certification achieved, Yesi secured an offer of a job as a SOC Analyst Tier 1 for Perspecta. Yesi completed his second SANS Cyber Academy course, Hacker Exploits and Incident Handling, and passed the associated GCIH exam on July 7th. He started his new job on July 9th at a salary of $65,000 per year, more than doubling his previous income. Yesi’s natural talent, his passion for learning, and his professionalism will help him continue to take on more responsibility and build a great career in which he can continue to serve the United States by improving cyber security for corporations and government agencies.
