Meet Ms. Coates

Workforce Challenge

Ms. Coates, a Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program client, was unemployed and looking for training in the healthcare field.

Workforce Solution

The career navigation specialist at Meade Village worked in tandem with the Housing Commission of Anne Arundel County to assist Ms. Coates in achieving the goals she set within the FSS program. She was interested in obtaining a high school diploma and Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)/Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) certification, pursuing the field of phlebotomy, and ultimately desired to purchase a home.

Ms. Coates attended Meade Village's "Tools for Employment" training as well as résumé, interviewing skills, and job search strategies workshops. Through the WIOA Title I program, she completed the CNA/GNA training and the phlebotomy training, and she is looking forward to starting her Patient Care Technician training while she works on earning her high school diploma via the GED® program. As Ms. Coates exclaimed, “I can do this!”

Outcomes & Benefits

Ms. Coates is currently employed at Baltimore Washington Medical Center as a companion. She recently attended the Meade Village’s “Financial Literacy” training, facilitated by Arundel Community Development Services (ACDS). After the training, she registered to be a part of the First Time Homebuyers program. At the end of March 2019, she met with Ms. McGeth from ACDS to provide the required documentation.

Ms. Coates completed the goals she set two years ago for the FSS Program, and in April 2019 she received a check from the Housing Commission for her accomplishments.
