Summer Jobs Program - SHRM Training

Maryland - Summer Jobs Program - SHRM Training

Workforce Innovation Submitted By: Frederick County Workforce Services

Community Challenge/Problem

The Frederick County Summer Jobs Program provides valuable work experience to youth between the ages of 14 and 21 who possess barriers to employment (such as a disability or low-income status). Most of the participants have never held a job before and are typically unfamiliar with workplace expectations, which can create a roadblock to success.

Board Solution/Innovation

A team of volunteers from the Frederick chapter of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) prepared and facilitated a work-readiness training session for over 100 Frederick County Summer Jobs Program participants. Topics covered included Professional Communication, Technology in the Workplace, Attitudes & Appearances, and Financial Literacy.

Outcomes & Results

As a result of the training delivered by SHRM, participants gained a better understanding of workplace practices and employer expectations. At the end of the 2012 Summer Jobs Program, 88% of participants earned an outstanding performance certificate. Prior to the implementation of the SHRM training component, only 64% of participants earned this recognition. This represents a 24% increase in outstanding performance by Summer Jobs Program participants.
