Workforce Challenge

Workforce Success Story Submitted By: Arkansas Workforce Center - Rogers
On the Job Training funds and candidate referral help company identify an employee to fill a challenging position.

Bill Towler of AMP Electrical & Maintenance Services had an open position that would require training in company procedures as well as the ability to travel for the company, among other requirements. He had had difficulty identifying a candidate because of the travel requirement, so he turned to the Arkansas Workforce Center at Rogers to see if they could help.

Workforce Solution

The WIA staff in Rogers was counseling a young man who had recently been released from prison and had taken some courses while in prison in electrical maintenance. Bill was interested in working with the young man so WIA placed him in the On the Job Training program, which would reimburse AMP a portion of his wages during the training period. The young man began working for AMP Electrical & Maintenance Services. Along with the OJT opportunity, he received WIA Tuition assistance and began attending a school in the area to gain his 1st year Apprentice license as an Electrician.

Outcomes & Benefits

This young man now is gainfully employed and has overcome a potentially significant employment barrier. He is earning money to support himself, and has become an active citizen in the community.
